The BYD ETT 44 is a new entrant to the European market, delivering a safety offering that covers all the features that Euro NCAP assesses receiving the full 5-star rating with CitySafe award. The vehicle's standout feature is its excellent direct vision for a long-haul vehicle, owing to the low cab mounting height, lower door vision window and eMirrors (CMS) which reduce the obstructions of the driver's eyeline. While direct vision is a clear strength, crash avoidance performance falls short of the leading performers, especially in frontal and lane departure vehicle-to-vehicle collision avoidance tests. While the truck demonstrated good general scoring across its Safe Driving and Crash Avoidance systems, a number of safety functions showed scope for further refinement, indicating that some systems have not yet reached the level of maturity demonstrated by the market leaders. With a good level of standard specification and additional rated safety options including a vision window, eMirrors (CMS) and Lane Departure Control functions, BYD provides fleets with access to a broad range of safety technologies. Overall, the BYD ETT 44 delivers a competitive first showing, with excellent direct vision helping to offset areas where further refinement of several driver assistance and safety systems is still required.
