Verdict

The F-MAX offers a solid 3-star safety performance, delivering in both Safe Driving and Collision Avoidance. Whilst its direct vision is average for a long haul cab, the optional camera monitor system enhances both direct and indirect vision with improved close proximity and rear views. Ford offer a broad range of driver support and crash avoidance technologies, examples of which include an ACC system that can automatically adjust to the local speed limit and a high performing AEB system that provides very effective protection in vehicle front to rear collisions. AEB for frontal collisions with vulnerable road users is optional, but AEB for nearside turning collisions with cyclists is not available, suggesting that the Ford F-MAX is more suited to highway operations.

The F-MAX is a tall vehicle with shallower windows and a high beltline, limiting direct vision. However, the optional fit camera monitor system replaces the conventional mirrors covering the class II, IV and VI views and augments the class V mirror, enhancing the driver’s view of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists around the truck. It scores full marks for the driver and passenger seat belt reminder and is equipped with a driver attention assist system that exceeds regulatory requirements. The F-MAX ACC can adjust the set speed to match the local speed limit and the system proved highly effective at addressing front to rear collisions in highway driving.

The F-MAX offers an AEB system for front to rear collisions with vehicles as standard equipment which performs well across all driving speeds in the scenarios that Euro NCAP assess. An AEB system for frontal collisions with pedestrians and cyclists is available as an option. It was effective at avoiding collisions at lower speeds and mitigating higher urban speed impacts. The F-MAX does not feature an AEB system that acts to prevent nearside turning collisions with cyclists which deems it less suitable for urban operations. The optional steering support system was limited in its performance, often allowing greater lane departure than Euro NCAP reward, although it did smoothly return the vehicle to a safe path thus limiting driver annoyance.
