Verdict

All-round excellent performance from the Transit Courier. It has a lot of safety equipment available, almost all of it standard equipment on all grades, and this generally works well. With the same crash avoidance technology as its passenger-car counterparts, the Transit Courier easily meets Euro NCAP's requirements for a Platinum rating. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which includes Forward Collision Warning (FCW), uses camera-radar fusion and performs well in tests of its reaction to other vehicles. Against a slower-moving target and against a stationary target, the autonomous braking system avoids a collision in almost all of the test scenarios. Some drop-off in performance is seen only for the forward-collision warning against a stationary target but, overall, the van scores highly in this part of the assessment. The system also detects vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists and, here, the system excels. Maximum points are scored in all of Euro NCAP's pedestrian test scenarios apart from the reversing configuration, where the van has no system to detect pedestrians behind it. In tests of the system's reaction to cyclists, the van again scores nearly full points.

Lane assistance is provided by the Lane Keeping System, which gently corrects the vehicle's path if it is drifting out of lane and intervenes more aggressively in critical situations where the van would otherwise leave the road or collide with other vehicles. The system responds to a variety of lane edges, such as solid and dashed lines and unmarked road edges. A blind-spot monitoring system is available as an option.

A camera and digital mapping are used to establish the local speed limit and this information is presented to the driver and the limiter can be set manually by the driver or by the car itself

A seatbelt reminder is provided for the driver and passenger seating positions. A driver-state monitoring system uses steering inputs to identify behaviour which is characteristic of fatigued or impaired driving and advises the driver to rest.
