Verdict

MAN refused to provide a vehicle for safety testing, citing that their vehicles comply with all current safety regulations. Despite this, Euro NCAP were able to source, test and rate a GSR2 compliant tractor in 2024, equipped with all the relevant safety options to compare its safety perfomance with competitor models. This rating for the rigid is carried over from the 2024 tractor unit test. The TGX offers a solid 3-star safety performance, well balanced between Safe Driving and Collision Avoidance. Its direct vision performance remains weak, scoring zero in our rating. However, it is optionally available with a very good camera monitor system, which provides enhanced driver vision. It provides a very good range of crash avoidance technologies with a high performing lane support system suggesting that the MAN TGX is better suited to highway operations.

The TGX is a tall vehicle with shallow windows and a high beltline, limiting direct vision and scoring zero points. However, it is optionally available with a very good camera monitor system that integrates class II, IV and V views in a single display, offering the driver an enhanced view of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to both sides of the vehicle. It scores full marks for the driver’s seat belt reminder and, optionally the passenger seat depending on seat specification. It is equipped with a compliant driver attention assist system. It also includes an innovative safe stop feature, which can help bring the vehicle to a controlled stop in the event

the driver becomes unresponsive. The TGX has a close following warning and use of the ACC will help to prevent front to rear collisions on highways.

The TGX has good collision avoidance systems with strong performance of its AEB system sensitive to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. However, it lost points because unintentional accelerator input during AEB intervention will disable this vital safety system. An AEB system addressing nearside turning collisions with cyclists is not available. It has a very good lane keeping system, which tightly controls the excursion from the lane while smoothly returning the vehicle to a safe path, limiting driver annoyance. It further promotes driver acceptance by recognising situations where it should not intervene, for example, where the driver makes space for a stationary vehicle in an adjacent lane.
