Verdict

The Renault Trucks T earns a strong 4 star rating due largely to its high quality Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), getting balanced points across both Safe Driving and Collision Avoidance, most of which is standard fitment. It is more limited in its Direct Vision performance although its recent addition of a CMS system has improved its overall Safe Driving score. The Renault would also benefit from a cyclist turn across path function. Combined with the more limited direct vision, this makes it more suitable for Highway than City working.

The Renault Trucks T performs well in safe driving. It has relatively shallow windows with a high belt line relative to the drivers eye height, which limits direct vision. However, the replacement of the class II/IV mirrors with camera monitor systems helps improve direct vision. An supplementary camera monitor system is optionally available, which brings up a view of the nearside blind spot

on a secondary monitor, whenever the direction indicators are activated. This improves the vision at the front corner but duplicating the conventional mirror risks an increase in driver workload. Seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats, encouraging belt use. The attention assist system exceeds minimum legal requirements without excessive false alerts. A close following distance warning is available and the use of the ACC reduces the risk of front into rear collisions.

The Renault T has a range of crash avoidance technologies that generally perform well. It is equipped with an AEB system that is very good at avoiding collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. An AEB system that prevents nearside collisions with cyclists is not available. Unintentional driver inputs during critical situations do not reduce system effectiveness. The AEB system cannot be turned off easily but if it is turned off, it doesn’t automatically reactivate. A good optional lane support system is available, which performs well in both lane keeping and lane change conflicts.
