Verdict

The Scania R-series was retested this year and earnt another star due to performance enhancements by the manufacturer meaning that, in both rigid and tractor configurations, it can be a very safe choice for operators when specified with the correct optional equipment. The R-series continues to be a solid performer with a balanced approach across Safe Driving and Collision Avoidance. It is available with nearly all of the driver assistance systems Euro NCAP consider and they perform well. The vision fundamentals are good, but the end result is still limited by obstructions from conventional mirrors. The range benefits from a zero emission variant, which complies with Euro NCAP's post crash safety requirements. Overall, its a good option particularly for highway operations, provided the appropriate options are selected at purchase.

The Scania R-series continues its solid performance in the Safe Driving category. It has deep windows with a low belt line improving driver vision. However, the driver’s eyepoint is relatively high and vision is partially blocked by the use of conventional class II/IV mirrors. The optional class V/VI camera monitor system, now replacing the conventional side kerb and front pedestrian mirrors, improves front corner vision and moderates driver workload. A seat belt reminder is fitted on all seats, encouraging belt use. The attention assist system exceeds minimum legal requirements without excessive false alerts. A close following distance warning is not available. Use of the ACC will reduce the risk of front to rear collisions.

The Scania R-series has a range of crash avoidance technologies, and system improvements have further enhanced its safety credentials. It is equipped with an AEB system that is very good at avoiding collisions with other vehicles. An optional addition to the AEB is also good at avoiding frontal collisions with pedestrians and cyclists. Unintentional driver inputs during critical situations do not reduce system effectiveness. The system cannot be turned off easily and if turned off, automatically reactivates within 15 minutes. An AEB system addressing nearside turning collisions with cyclists is not available. An optional lane support system is available, with limited lane keeping performance but a very good response in lane change conflicts with other vehicles.
